Breast Cancer Risk Assessment

VisExcell was a DreamIt Ventures startup working in partnership with large hospital systems in Pennsylvania and NYC including Penn Medicine, UPMC, AHN, and NYU Langone. The team was focused on challenging the status quo in assessing and managing breast cancer risk by blending computer aided detection and digital community tools.

Elevate risk awareness

In 2015, statistics showed that early indicators were missed 23% of the time and only one tenth of the people who should get an MRI were doing so.

Visexcell believed that collaborative, patient-friendly input, validated and easily accessible scoring, and a community platform for discussion and support could fundamentally change the outcome.

This user flow outlines the onboarding and activation experience. Key to this flow was the idea of score sharing in response to the insight that normalizing the discussion around breast cancer. By creating a place for women to see, share, and track each others scores, they would provide a support network to increase testing and detection.

Accessibility and access for all women.

Like many other diseases, ongoing assessment and management has a significant impact on detection.

With a mobile accessible score and chart, women would have around the clock access to their scores, trend lines, and the latest articles and advice about breast health and care.

As breast cancer can affect women at any age, it was clear that not all patients are comfortable with technology. With awareness to the differing digital confidence levels among the user population, we conceived of a paper input form that could be easily captured and converted by a mobile device camera.

field tested experience

To validate the hypothesis, we ran UX field testing to confirm solution value, usability, and desirability among a small sample of women. While not statistically significant, the feedback was helpful to validate the early stage concept.
